LEGEND HAS IT IN ITALY that La Befana, the Strega or witch, was approached by the Three Kings a few days before Christ's birth. They asked her for directions to the Christ child, but she didn't know. They invited her to join them on the journey to find the Christ child, however she declined because she was too busy with her housework. Later, La Befana had a change of heart and tried to find them but couldn't. So to this day, every January 6th the Feast of Epiphany, La Befana the witch, flies on a broom still searching for the Three Kings and the Christ Child. She leaves all the good children candy and presents and the bad children a lump of coal in their stockings. Many people believe that the name Befana is derived from the mispronunciation of the Italian word Epifania, (English: Epiphany) meaning "to manifest" or "to show," is a ÒFeast DayÓ which celebrates the "shining forth." Epiphany and La Befana fall on the last day of The Twelve Days of Christmas.
